Chonburi —
The annual Buffalo Racing Festival in Chonburi province, Thailand, took place on October 28th, 2023 with the theme “One of a Kind in Thailand, One of a Kind in the World.”
The traditional event, held at the central stage in front of the Chonburi Provincial Administration Organization, saw enthusiastic participation from the local community and international tourists.
Chonburi Governor Mr. Thawatchai Srithong, along with Ms. Prapatsara Srithong, the Chairwoman of Chonburi’s Village Headmen, inaugurated the 152nd edition of this century-old tradition.
The Buffalo Racing Festival is deeply ingrained in the local culture and has been celebrated in Chonburi for over a century. Traditionally held on the 14th day of the 11th lunar month, farmers from the province bring their nimble buffaloes to compete in the races. It is believed that this ritual bestows protection to the buffaloes from diseases and prevents natural disasters.
In addition to the races, the festival featured a procession of buffalo decorated carts, cultural performances, and various competitions including buffalo beauty contests and traditional sports. The event continues to be a vibrant celebration of Chonburi’s rich cultural heritage and agricultural traditions.
