Alcohol Sales Banned for End of Buddhist Lent This Upcoming Sunday

Thailand –

The end of Buddhist Lent this year will be on Sunday, October 29th when alcohol sales will be banned nationwide for 24 hours.

The End of Buddhist Lent also called “Awk Phansa” in Thai falls on the 15th day of the 11th waxing moon. The day marks the end of the rainy season for monks who will end their three-month retreats.

Alcohol sales will be banned for 24 hours nationwide at the end of Buddhist Lent except at duty-free shops at international airports according to the Alcohol Control Act. Anyone who breaks the law will be fined up to 10,000 baht or imprisoned for up to six months or both.

The end of Buddhist Lent is one of the five major Buddhist Days which are Makha Bucha, Visakha Bucha, Asarnha Bucha and Khao Pansa (Beginning of Buddhist Lent).

The official ban is from midnight to midnight, which would run from Saturday night, the 28th, to Sunday night the 29th/Monday morning.
