A 42-year-old man and a 14-year-old girl’s boating expedition in the Pattaya sea took a dangerous turn when their boat capsized and almost caused both of them to drown.
The near-drowning incident unfolded at 4:30 AM yesterday morning, October 19th, prompting emergency responders to rush to the scene in the waters off Pattaya, just before Walking Street in South Pattaya, Banglamung district, Chonburi province.
At the beach, many tourists gathered to witness a couple of people struggling to swim to the shore. About 200 meters off the beach, there appeared to be a capsized kayak slowly sinking into the sea.
Emergency responders provided assistance to the two victims, later identified by police as 42-year-old Mr. Nopporn Buasunthon and a 14-year-old girl referred to as “A” (alias, name withheld due to her age). Both managed to reach the shore safely without any injuries after their kayak capsized at sea.
According to Mr. Nopporn’s statement, he claimed that he stumbled upon the girl and her friends by accident on the beach. The young girl told Nopporn that she was on vacation and never saw the sea before and begged him to take her for a boat ride in the waters of Pattaya. Mr. Nopporn then volunteered to take her for kayaking, but they didn’t get really far as their kayak gradually submerged.
Mr. Nopporn admitted that the capsizing was probably due to “his weight” and not that of the girl. Emergency responders said they both were lucky to be alive and unharmed.
However, Pattaya police stated that they would conduct further investigation on the incident, as individuals under 18 years old should not be lingering around the beach at night without their parents or legal guardian, according to the current regulations.
