Pattaya Mayor Proposes Installing CCTV Cameras to Deter Motorcycles from Using Central Bypass Tunnel

Pattaya —

The Mayor of Pattaya, Mr. Poramase Ngampiches, has proposed the installation of CCTV cameras in the middle of the Central Pattaya tunnel to deter motorcyclists from using the thoroughfare. The move comes after repeated attempts to enforce the ban on motorcycles using the shortcut have failed.

The tunnel is a major shortcut for commuters. However, motorcycles are not allowed to use the tunnel due to safety concerns. Accidents involving motorcycles in tunnels can be particularly dangerous, as there is limited space to maneuver, Mr. Poramase explained.

Despite the ban, an average of 5,000 motorcycles enter the tunnel each month. The city has tried to deter motorcyclists from using the tunnel by issuing hefty fines and warning signs, but these measures have not been effective.

“The CCTV cameras will be able to identify and track motorcycles entering the tunnel,” Mr. Poramase said. “Violators will be subject to fines and other penalties.”

The Mayor went on to say that the installation of CCTV cameras is a necessary step to ensure the safety of everyone using the tunnel. He urged motorcyclists to obey the law and avoid using the tunnel.
