Now for the update:

The Phuket Marine Office Chief Mr. Chayapong Pranit told the Phuket Express that they have filed a report to the Chalong Police and other police stations in all three districts that have beaches.

Anyone releasing oil into the sea can be imprisoned for up to three years or fined up to 60,000 baht or both. They must also pay the costs of cleaning up the damage caused by the released oil.

There were in total 81 boats in the area of interest during the past seven days when oil stains were found on beaches in a 95 nautical mile area on Phuket’s west coast. Of those, 62 were cargo boats, 18 were tanker boats, and one was a tug supply boat. Police reports were filed against multiple boats believed to be responsible for the oil spill, although the owners have yet to be identified to the public.

Within two days, the oil will be completely cleaned up from all local beaches, says Chayapong.
