Pattaya Man Fined 1,000 Baht for Punching South Korean Live Streamer, Live Streamer Fined As Well

Pattaya —

A Thai man was fined for punching a South Korean live streamer who was live-streaming Pattaya’s night scene near Pattaya Beach. The assailant claimed that he punched the victim because the victim refused to stop recording him and allegedly flipped him off.

The moment when the streamer was struck can be viewed here.

The violence first came to public attention through a Facebook user named “Social Hunter 2021,” who on Friday, July 28th, shared a 24-second video clip depicting an incident at Pattaya beach. In the video, two Thai men could be seen arguing with a South Korean man before one of them punched him in the face, resulting in him bleeding.

Social Hunter 2021 noted in a social media post that the men seemed peeved at being recorded by the tourist. They asked him to stop, but the tourist refused and showed them a middle finger, leading to the altercation, said Social Hunter 2021.

Following this incident, The Pattaya News interviewed Pol Lt Col Pichaya Kheawpluang, who took charge of the case, about what had happened. He said that the South Korean tourist, identified as Mr. Eunsung Lee, 36, was live-streaming on YouTube on Pattaya Beach, showing what the night scene looked like, when he accidentally recorded a group of Thai men drinking alcohol by the beach.

The Thai men became agitated and shouted at Lee to stop the live-stream as they felt they were being filmed. Dissatisfied with the men’s gesture, the South Korean man retaliated by allegedly raising his middle finger at them and walking towards them to confront them, Pol Lt Col Pichaya stated. This led to a fight, with one Thai man punching Lee’s face two times, causing his nose to bleed. Lee was recording this exact moment on his phone and did not fight back.

After the fight, Pol Lt Col Pichaya arrested the assailant in the video and charged him for physically assaulting others. He was identified as Mr. Anupong Winwondee, a 27-year-old Thai national.

Lee and Anupong were summoned to the Pattaya police station where they reached a peaceful solution. Anupong was fined 1,000 baht and apologized to Lee, while Lee agreed to delete his live-streaming video with Anupong’s face in it. He was released after paying the fine. Lee was also fined a thousand baht for voluntarily quarreling and being a public nuisance.

Pattaya police have previously noted that recording video in public is completely legal, such as on the beach, but that streamers should still be considerate about their audience to avoid offending anyone.
