Intoxicated Driver Plunges into Roadside Ditch in Pattaya

Pattaya —

A Thai pickup truck driver survived a plunge into a roadside ditch in Pattaya with slight injuries this morning, July 27th. Intoxication was believed to be the cause of the accident, according to rescue workers.

The victim, Mr. Narongrit Chanton, a 46-year-old native of Sa Kaeo province, eastern Thailand, was rescued by good Samaritans and Sawang Boriboon rescuers, after his pickup truck plunged into a ditch near the Mabprachan Reservoir in Pattaya at 2:00 AM on Thursday.

His truck, a bronze Mitsubishi Triton, was partially submerged in the water. After prying open the truck’s door, Narongrit was safely rescued by rescuers with minor injuries. However, the rescuers informed The Pattaya News that they suspected Narongrit might be drunk, as he exhibited signs of intoxication and was unable to speak coherently.

Asking the man, Narongrit claimed that he dozed off while trying to drive home. The truck veered off the road into a roadside creek, he said.

The Pattaya News interviewed one Good Samaritan, who helped rescue Narongrit, and was told that he heard a loud noise before rushing out of his house to find the car partially submerged in the water. He also mentioned that the driver appeared drunk.

The police are investigating the accident. It is unclear, however, if they will press any charges against the driver.
