House Speaker Wan Muhamad Noor Matha on Tuesday, July 25th, decided to postpone the prime ministerial voting originally set for July 27th.
The move was made due to the Constitutional Court’s pending decision on the Office of the Ombudsman’s petition about Pita Limjaroenrat’s rejection for PM renomination on July 19th.
Pita, leader and PM candidate for the Move Forward Party, was opposed by 394 parliamentarians for being re-nominated as a prime minister based on a parliamentary regulation.
A complaint by the Move Forward Party was subsequently filed to the Ombudsman, which alleged the parliamentary regulations could not affect the PM voting because the voting was outlined in the charter, the supreme law of the country.
The Ombudsman then asked the court yesterday to rule on the issue. They also asked the PM voting set for July 27th to be postponed until the court makes a verdict.
The new voting date is still unclear and is for now postponed indefinitely until the courts can rule on the PM renomination voting. A date for that is not yet set. Meanwhile, Thailand’s forming of a new government continues to be delayed.
