Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Sri Racha Welcomes Three New Capybaras

Sri Racha —

Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Sri Racha welcomed three new capybaras to its furry family yesterday, July 13rd.

The adult parent capybaras, the largest rodent species in the world, had given birth to three new members on May 5th, 2023, at Khao Kheow Open Zoo. However, they are only now old enough for viewing from the public as of July 13th, 2023.

The news came as a delight for the facility as the adorable species are all in perfect health.

The three of them were born to a couple named “Jiew” (a 2-year-old male) and “Som” (a 2-year-old female).

The gender of the babies has not yet been identified as they are still being raised and guarded naturally by their mother.

At present, Khao Kheow Open Zoo has a total of 14 capybaras (10 females and 4 males). Mr. Tevin Rattanawongsawat, the director of the zoo, invites visitors to come and say hi to them.

Originating from South America, capybara is considered the largest rodent in the world, closely related to the guinea pig.

It has coarse, light brown fur, no tail, and webbed feet adapted for swimming. Capybara are found in the southern part of Central America and the northern part of South America, inhabiting grasslands, rainforests, areas near swamps, rivers, and lakes.
