A group of Thai royalists gathered in front of the US embassy yesterday, May 24th, urging the United States to stop interfering with Thai politics and undermining the country’s institution of monarchy, according to them.

The protest followed reports from Thai conservative news outlets, which continuously alleged that the US’s Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) had intervened in the Thai election on May 14th to ensure the installation of the Move Forward Partythe party that won the electionin the government.

As evidence of alleged interference, the protesters brought up US Ambassador Robert Godec’s “call” for the Thai government to promptly release the election results, which he wrote on the day after the election.

The US ambassador wrote: “Yesterday, tens of millions of people participated in the vote across the Kingdom of Thailand – as election observers, poll workers, members of the media, candidates, and, most importantly, voters. As a longstanding friend and ally of Thailand, the United States looks forward to the final results.”

In response to the petition, Godec met with the demonstrators in person to accept their complaint yesterday. He then wrote on Twitter, “I thanked them (the protestors) for coming and reiterated that the U.S respects the institution of the Thai monarchy and the great esteem in which Thais hold the Royal Family.”

He continued: “I emphasized that the U.S did not have a preferred outcome in the election and does not support a party or candidate. We look forward to working with the government that emerges from Thailand’s democratic process. The Thai people alone should choose who governs them.”
