Three Chinese Suspects Arrested For Abducting and Extorting Chinese College Student in Bangkok

National —

Bangkok Police apprehended three Chinese nationals for allegedly abducting and extorting around 3.2 million baht from a female Chinese master’s degree student.

The victim, Ms. Weng Menglu, a 32-year-old Chinese national, was kidnapped by the suspects in front of the Torisawa22 restaurant on Bangkok’s Ekkamai Road around 8 PM on March 16th. She later filed a report with the Thong Lor Police on Friday, saying she was tricked by a Chinese woman she had met a year ago named Xiao Yi.

The woman was with her at the restaurant, and while they were about to leave, Xiao Yi lured Menglu to get into a black Toyota Alphard van with Bangkok license plates. Although reluctant, the victim was forced into the car by two men who suddenly emerged from the vehicle, choked her neck, and dragged her into the van.

Menglu told police Xiao Yi also hopped into the van with the suspects. The victim was tied up while being transported to some unknown location where she was threatened at knife-point and forced to transfer 250,000 yuan (about 1.24 million baht) to the three abductors.

They also forced her to use a cryptocurrency app to transfer Tether stablecoin worth around 273,000 baht. Throughout the night, the perpetrators continued to intimidate her, even forcing her to contact her boyfriend in China to transfer an additional 50,000 USDT (Tether) – an equivalent of 1.7 million baht. In total, Menglu lost about 3.2 million baht before she was kicked out of the van in Bangkok’s Min Buri district.

The victim wandered home alone and filed a report with Thong Lor Police on Friday, which quickly led to the suspects’ arrest on the previous weekend. Police said the suspects rented a van for 5,000 baht a day between March 15th to 17th to conduct the abduction. They stated Xiao Yi was the accomplice who acted as a bait to trick her compatriot.

The three abductors briefly fled to Pattaya before moving to Sa Kaeo province where the authorities arrested them. They entered Thailand three times by using student visas, according to police data. The three are being intensely questioned by police.
