National —

Incumbent Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha officially signed up as a member of the Ruam Thai Saang Chart (United Thai Nation) Party on Monday, January 9th.

His debut event was grandly hosted at Bangkok’s Queen Sirikit National Convention Center and was attended by more than 10,000 attendees, including Ruam Thai Saang Chart leader Pirapan Salirathavibhaga.

The Prime Minister finally decided to leave his old political coalition party, Palang Pracharath, after weeks of rumors reported by several media outlets.

General Prayut, who is also the Minister of Defense, told his supporters that he wanted to stay on as premier not because he craved power or personal benefits but because he respected Thailand’s democratic system and the country must move forward.

Nonetheless, even if he is elected as premier in the next poll, General Prayut will be able to stay in office for only two years instead of four due to the Constitutional Court’s ruling, which says that his premiership term should expire in 2025.
