Former Myanmar beauty contestant Han Lay granted asylum in Canada, local media reports

Former Myanmar beauty contestant Han Lay on Tuesday, September 27th has been granted asylum in Canada after being detained in Bangkok last Thursday.

According to local media, she is scheduled to depart from Thailand today and will make a transit at South Korea before heading to Toronto, Canada, on Tuesday night.

She was reportedly under the good hands of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) shortly after she was reported detained at the Suvarnabhumi Immigration office. She will be assisted by the officials throughout the asylum process.

According to the Thailand’s Immigration Bureau, Han Ley was detained under Section 12 of the Immigration Act 1979 last week due to an irregularity spotted in her passport while she was entering the Kingdom after returning from Vietnam.
