Thailand House subcommitee does not allow a 2023 budget proposal from the Air Force to buy two combat jets for 7.4 billion baht

Thailand –

A House subcommittee scrutinizing procurement decided to cut the budget for buying two F-35A combat jets for a cool 7.4 billion baht from the United States of America.

Yesterday, (July 25th) Pheu Thai MP Yuttapong Jarassatean, deputy chair of the House subcommittee on durable goods, and information technology told the associated Thai press, “The Royal Thai Air Force has requested to buy two combat jets, F-35A, which cost 7.4 billion baht. However, in our meeting, the committee has cut this part of the 2023 budget for buying these jets.”

“The reasons are that the Royal Thai Air Force cannot provide clear details about whether the United States Congress will sell those jets to Thailand or not. The process of buying those jets will take up to 20 months.” Yuttapong explained.

“So, we agree that this part of the budget can be used for public benefits instead after the Covid-19 pandemic to help people. Buying air force jets is not urgent at this time.” Yuttapong concluded.

The Royal Thai Air Force did not immediately release a counter statement but were welcome to submit a request for the 2024 fiscal budget year, according to Yuttapong.
