Pattaya residents are pleading with the new mayor to fix the dancing water fountain, a once beautiful Pattaya landmark, that had been left unrepaired for years.

The dancing fountain is one of several projects done during the era of the National Council for Peace and Order in 2017. At that time, the council ordered Pattaya City to renovate the Bali Hai pier to improve its capacity for facilitating and attracting tourists—the driving force behind the establishment of the dancing water fountain.

According to reports, the fountain was one of several ornaments installed on an imposing 10-rai space near the Bali Hai pier for a total cost of 81 million baht. However, the fountain started to malfunction, got fixed, misbehaved again, and then got fixed over and over after only two years of functioning. Eventually, the dancing fountain ceased working entirely during the last Pattaya mayor’s regime.

Regarding the residents’ complaints, most are concerned that the large budget allocated for this project will be wasted. They urged the new mayor, Poramese Ngampiches, to be thoughtful before building any new city decorations. The residents said that there were many ruins in Pattaya that could still be restored to serve their initial purposes so that all those budgets will not go in vain.

TPN has covered attempts to repair the fountain a number of times over the years, but without consistent maintenance any attempt to repair the fountain will surely once again lead to disrepair. A set, regular maintenance schedule will be needed if the fountain is to be regularly functioning.
