Thailand and Japan sign strategic partnership agreement for financial cooperation, defense, and healthcare

Thailand and Japan yesterday, May 2nd, has signed an agreement of strategic partnership, including financial cooperation, the transfer of defense equipment and technology, and urgent support for Thailand’s post-Covid healthcare.

The signing ceremony was witnessed by Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-O’Cha and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida who paid an official visit to the Kingdom as the government guest between May 1st and the 2nd.

The Thai Prime Minister said after the end of the meeting that the visit of Mr. Kishida and their meeting had strengthened the inclusive and comprehensive strategic partnership between Thailand and Japan.

The discussion focused on six major issues: 1. A strategic partnership between both countries; 2. Economic cooperation; 3. Japan’s assistance and public health cooperation to revitalize Thailand from the Covid-19 hardships; 4. Strengthening cooperation on defense, security, and justice; 5. Development partnership of sub-regions and regions between Thailand and Japan; and 6. Cooperation to deal with regional and international situations.

Both prime ministers had exchanged views on the current situation in Ukraine and Myanmar and both sides reiterated the principle of territorial integrity, international law, and the United Nations Charter.

Regarding cooperation in sub-regional and regional development, the two leaders also agreed to develop the Mekong sub-region under the Mekong-Japan cooperation and the Ayeyawady-Chao Phraya-Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy (ACMECS) framework.

Prime Minister Prayut continued that Thailand, as the coordinator of the ASEAN-Japan dialogue and the APEC summit this year, will reaffirm its commitment to enhancing ASEAN-Japan cooperation in all aspects. He also thanked Japan for its support of Thailand’s hosting of the APEC summit in November this year under the theme of “Open, Connect, Balance”.

After the joint press conference, Prime Minister Prayut hosted a dinner for the Prime Minister of Japan at the Santimaitri Building in the Government House.
