331 road accidents reported on third dangerous day of Songkran with 323 injured and 40 casualties

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation reported 331 road accidents today and 331 casualties so far since April 11th. 

Today, April 14th, Mr. Buntham Lertsukhikasem, Director-General of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, reported 331 road accidents on the third day of seven dangerous days during Songkran with 323 injured people and 40 casualties. The most common causes of accidents were drunk driving (30.51%) and high-speed driving (30.21%). The most accident-prone vehicles were motorcycles (81.36%), and most accidents happened on highways.

The top provinces with the most accidents were Kanchanaburi and Chiang Mai each with 15 accidents. The province with the most casualties was Samut Sakhon with 5 casualties, and the most injured was Kanchanaburi with 15 injured people.            

In total, 869 accidents were reported from April 11th to the 13th, resulting in 113 fatalities and 853 injuries. Nakhon Si Thammarat had the most accidents with 33, Samut Sakhon had the most casualties with 6, and Nakhon Si Thammarat had the most injured people with 36.    

“In the past three days, motorcycles are the most accident-prone vehicles which are attributable to helmetless driving and high-speed driving. On the second day of the seven dangerous days, most people already arrived at their destination, resulting in increased accidents on community roads, so the officers responsible in these areas needed to pay more attention, especially at tourist attractions,” Mr. Buntham said.    

He also said that according to the Meteorological Department,  people in the upper part of Thailand may experience thunderstorms in certain areas which may cause slippery roads and poor vision, so drivers need to take precautions.
