Thailand’s cabinet committee approves ten measures to help ease public financial hardship, starting May until July

  The Cabinet Committee today, March 22nd, had announced ten measures to help remedy the current financial hardship for the public, especially among “blue-collar” workers, from May to July.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-O’Cha, as a chairman of the Committee, told the Associated Press after the cabinet meeting that the government had closely monitored the situation and were well aware of the hardships of the Thai people, especially people with low income and laborers.

From the government’s assessments of the domestic situation and the Russia-Ukraine situation that might not end anytime soon, the Prime Minister has ordered the relevant agencies to come up with urgent measures to help ease people’s living costs.

The concluded 10 measures, which are expected to start from May until July, are as follows:

  1. An increase of cooking gas subsidies from 45 baht to 100 baht a month for 3.6 million state welfare cardholders
  2. A 100-baht cooking gas purchase discount for 5,500 registered street vendors
  3. Subsidies for petrol costs (gasohol) of 250 baht per month for 157,000 motorcycle taxi and taxi drivers registered under the Department of Land Transport. The government also requested the Department of Land Transport to regulate the same service prices.
  4. Maintaining the NGV (natural gas for vehicles) retail price at 15.59 baht per kilogram
  5. A NGV price of 13.62 baht per kilogram for taxi drivers who participated in the PTT’s (Petroleum Authority of Thailand) ‘same breath’ program
  6. Price reduction of electricity costs that will increase by 22 satangs per unit during May to August for those who use electricity not more than 300 units per month
  7. Freeze the diesel retail price at 30 baht per liter until the end of April 2022. After that, the government would help spend on increased diesel price by half.
  8. Assistance of cooking gas price adjustments from April to June with gas funds to help reduce the impact of the increase.
  9. A contribution rate reduction of employers and employees registered under Section 33 of the social security system from 5 percent to 1 percent to allow more spending power and business liquidity.
  10. A contribution rate reduction for insured persons under section 39 of the social security system from 9 percent to 1.9 percent and those under section 40 to about 42-180 baht per month.
