First lot of Molnupiravir arrives in Thailand for Covid-19 treatment among elderly/vulnerable groups

National –

The first lot of two million Molnupiravir capsules have arrived in Thailand yesterday, March 18th, for Covid-19 treatment in the elderly aged over 60 and patients with health conditions.

Dr. Somsak Ankasil, Director-General of the Department of Medical Services, revealed to the press that the medicine, delivered by MSD Thailand Company Limited, would initially be handed to Covid-19 patients in the 608 group, which is the elderly of 60 years and older and patients with seven chronic diseases. More distribution among patients aged 18 years and over may be considered if more medicine is delivered in the future.

The amount of 2 million Molnupiravir would be available for 50,000 treatment courses. Patients must take the medicine twice a day, 4 capsules per time, for 5 consecutive days, totaling 40 capsules. A full course of Molnupiravir helped reduce the chance of death or hospitalization among Covid-19 patients with risky and severe symptoms.

The department would thoroughly re-establish drug distribution and usage guidelines before preparing to distribute the medicines to various hospitals next week, the Director-General added.
