Chonburi –

A 46-year-old disabled man was found dead after his hut caught fire in Mueang Chonburi earlier this week.

Saen Suk firefighters were notified of the fire overnight on Thursday, December 9th, in the Saen Suk sub-district of Mueang Chonburi. They arrived at the scene with two fire engines to find the fire was heavily ablaze at a makeshift hut structure. It took more than one hour for firefighters to put out the fire, which spread to some nearby brush and trees.

The hut was totally destroyed as a result of the blaze. The body of the disabled man, who was identified as Mr. Somjai Puddee, 46, from Phetchabun, was found deceased inside the hut, having suffered extreme burns.

Mrs. Thip, whose age and last name was not given to the press, a local resident who lives nearby Somjai, told TPN media, “Mr. Somjai was a disabled man who was unable to walk. He liked to drink alcohol and he was unemployed, living alone with no family and off a small amount of disability payments from the government and the generosity of local residents who often gave him food. He was friendly to everyone and never caused problems, mostly drinking alone in his hut or with a friend or two.”

Mr. Wanchai, a neighbor, 42, told TPN media, “I was his close friend and we hung out together often. I had just brought food to him for his dinner. Mr. Somjai was cooking rice with a charcoal stove after I left.”

Mueang Chonburi police are continuing their investigation to find the exact cause of the fire but early appraisals seemed to point to the charcoal stove being used by Mr. Somjai, who due to his disability was tragically unable to escape the blaze.
