Ban Bueng –
A 36-year-old Thai man has reportedly been killed by at least three elephants in Ban Bueng earlier this week (November 15th).
The Ban Bueng Police was notified of the incident at 6:30 P.M. near a mountain in Baan Hin, Nong Paikaew sub-district. The particular area is remote and rural according to police.
Emergency responders and police arrived at the scene to find the body of a middle-aged Thai man who was later identified as Mr. Tongbai Kumarncherd, 36, from Roi-Et in the northeast of Thailand.
His body was found one kilometer from a local road by a local resident searching for food in the forest. On the ground. officials found multiple footprints from elephants, believing that at least three different animals were involved.
Mr. Soonthorn Suepsoonthorn, who found the victim, told Ban Bueng police, “I was searching for potatoes before I smelled a foul odor. It was then that I saw the body of Mr. Kumarncherd under a tree.”
A village headman of the nearest community, Mr. Akkarawat Thongtam, 55, told police, “Local villagers saw at least three elephants around October 28th last month near our village, which is in a rural and remote area. The villagers tried to chase them up onto a nearby hill. We believe they might be the same group of elephants that attacked Mr. Tongbai. This area has quite a few wild elephants and few visitors.”
Police believe Mr. Tongbai died at least 15 days before his body was found. An autopsy is set to be conducted to determine the exact cause of death. Mr. Thongtam stated that the victim was not known to nearby villagers and they did not know why he was there, although noted that people occasionally went hiking in the remote forests and jungles despite the danger from wild animals.
