The Thai Cabinet Committee today, October 1st, officially announced the approval of the extension to accept foreign tourists under the “Special Tourist Visa” (STV) for another year until September 30th, 2022.
The extension had previously been proposed earlier in September but is now truly official.
The extension would encourage foreigners with high purchasing power to visit Thailand for a long-term stay (90-270 days), according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand. It would potentially drive the domestic economy as a whole and the tourism industry as well as create jobs, incomes, and more opportunities after financial hardship due to the spread of Covid-19 Coronavirus.
The Ministry of Tourism and Sports also reported the overall results of the STV visa project in the past year. About 5,609 foreign tourists had arrived in Thailand, generating more than 1,243 million baht income for the country’s tourism industry.
The majority of travelers are from China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Denmark, the Netherlands, Spain, and Croatia. Most of them had quarantined and traveled in Bangkok, Koh Samui, Phuket, Udon Thani, Pattaya, Pathum Thani, Nonthaburi, Chiang Mai, and Rayong with an average stay of 90 days.
TPN media notes that the program, as stated by many people on social media, seems to have multiple restrictions, rules, and regulations and that those interested in the program should contact their local consulate or embassy for more information if they qualify.
