Pattaya –
The Pattaya City Administration is planning to add more water drainage pipes and systems near Pattaya Walking Street in South Pattaya to solve persistent flooding problems in the area.
Pattaya City Deputy Mayor Pattana Boonsawat and staffers have been surveying and visiting the area in front of Walking Street over the past several days.
Deputy Mayor Pattana told The Pattaya News, “Mayor Sonthaya Khunplome has found that from the South Pattaya Intersection along the Chalerm Phrakiet 2 Road is an area of concern that receives a high amount of rainwater through drainage from the city and from Sukhumvit Road.”
“When Pattaya suffers from heavy storms and persistent rain, floodwater in this part of South Pattaya is unable to quickly flow into the sea. Thus, this causes the South Pattaya Intersection to be flooded and issues with neighboring sois and streets.” Pattana explained.
“We have two areas in mind to install more water drainage pipes which are near the waste water pumping station in South Pattaya and at the entrance of Walking Street. ” Pattana stated.
“However, we are also working on a footpath expansion and developing the Pattaya Walking Street with underground cables and fixing the road, preparing to welcome foreign tourists from November,” Pattana concluded.
The entrance to walking Street is currently under construction for the planned cable management, footpath, and drainage project. Although an inconvenience, according to Pattana, the vast majority of businesses on the street remain closed as entertainment venues have yet to be allowed to open by the Thai government due to Covid-19 concerns. Pattana hopes the city is able to expedite the planned work before any potential reopening of the street.
There was not, however, a specific timeline given for the project, much like any opening of entertainment venues.
