Ministry of Interior orders Buddhist religious holidays, King’s birthday to be celebrated online due to Covid-19

The Ministry of the Interior, led by Mr. Chatchai Phromlert, the permanent secretary of the Ministry, released an order and notice this evening informing all governors in Thailand to mark His Royal Majesty the King’s birthday and two religious holidays online later this month.

This is to stop the potential spread of Covid-19 between officials and the public, according to the statement by the Ministry of the Interior.

The order states that well-wishes and blessings for the King’s birthday on July 28th, 2021, should be set up to be electronic and online.

Ceremonies marking the auspicious occasion of His Royal Majesty’s birthday should be done online as well, as officials and the public should not be mixing together.

Additionally, ceremonies for Asalha Bucha Day and the start of Buddhist Lent marked between July 24th to July 26th, should be online wherever possible or in closed temple settings without the public as well. Temple markets, public sermons, and other similar events should not be held in person and instead, move online.

The religious holidays will also see a ban of alcohol sales nationwide, as with all major Buddhist holidays in Thailand. Normally, they also see the closure of bars and nightlife, however, this sector has been closed due to Covid-19 in Thailand for over three months and counting currently.
