Chonburi –
Two Thais were arrested in Banglamung allegedly after being involved with a group of foreign online romance scammers.
Yesterday (April 1st) a team of police led by the Nongprue Police Chief Colonel Chitdaecha Songhong arrested two Thai women who were named as 25-year-old Kitthiwa ‘Goy’ Saehan and Karuna ‘Nam’ Kaewthet, 31. Seized from them were ATM cards and many bank books.
Colonel Chitdaecha told The Pattaya News, “The arrest came after police were notified that many victims had lost a lot of money due to ‘Online Romance Scams’. They were conned into sending money to someone they thought was a potential lover but was actually an organized group of criminals both in Thailand and in Africa.”
“These suspects had attained Thai bank books and ATM cards for about 7,000 baht with each set before selling the bank books to foreigners who stayed in other countries for about 15,000 baht each. These were used to convince potential victims the romantic interest was in the country.”
“When victims transferred money, these suspects withdrew money with an ATM for 3 -5 percent commision for their job before transferring the rest of the money to foreigners running the scam, primarily from African countries.”
“The two Thai women are facing charges of illegal possession and use of other people’s electronic cards.”
“The investigation continues into the overall network who are primarily foreign men pretending to be someone else to both foreign men and Thai women and convincing them to send them money for help. They then vanish after getting the money” The Colonel added.
