Five pro-democracy activists granted temporary bail after being indicted for allegedly attempting to harm Her Majesty the Queen’s liberty during protest last October

Five pro-democracy activists – including Ekachai Hongkangwan, Bunkueanun “Francis” Paothong, and Suranat Panprasert – were granted temporary bail yesterday, March 31st, after they were indicted for allegedly blocking Her Majesty the Queen’s motorcade last October.

The activists arrived at Bangkok’s Criminal Court yesterday morning to hear the court’s decision over their petition for a temporary release after they were charged for attempting to harm HM the Queen’s liberty.

They were seen by the authorities that they were among thousands of pro-democracy protesters who were marching to the Government House when the motorcade, carrying Prince Dipangkorn Rasmijoti and the Queen, was passing by Phitsanulok Road on October 14th, 2020.

According to the charges, five of them had violated Section 110 of the Criminal Code, stating that whoever commits or attempts to commit an act of violence against the Queen or Her liberty, the Heir-apparent or His liberty, or the Regent or his/her liberty, shall be punished with imprisonment for life or imprisonment of sixteen to twenty years.

They were also charged with Section 215 of staging a protest with more than 10 people being involved that tends to threaten to do an act of violence.

The court approved their petition for bail with a varied amount of bail money. Ekachai Hongkangwan and Suranat Panprasert were granted bail for 300,000 baht per person. Bunkueanun “Francis” Paothong and two others were bailed with securities of 200,000 baht. Their exact trial date has not been set.
