Thailand’s new tourism proposal of ‘Area Hotel Quarantine’ expected to be launched by start of May, still needs final approval from Cabinet

National –

Thailand’s Tourism and Sports Minister proposed ‘Area Hotel Quarantine’ in four popular tourist destinations, including Chonburi, is planned to welcome foreign tourists to travel in the country by May of this year.

Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn revealed earlier this week, March 4th, that the ministry had discussed the matter with the Health Service Support Department of the Ministry of Public Health and 216 tourism operators nationwide. They all agreed to prepare for wider border openings in April or May, according to their initial plan, as Thailand had already started to distribute Covid-19 vaccines on February 28th and by April and May more supply of vaccines were due to arrive.

The pilot provinces for the Area Hotel Quarantine are Chiang Mai, Phuket, Krabi, Chonburi in the Pattaya area, and Surat Thani in 3 islands, namely Koh Samui, Koh Tao, and Koh Phangan. However, other destinations can be applied for if there is overall public interest, Phiphat stated.

The Area Hotel Quarantine proposal will allow foreign tourists to perform alternative state quarantine for the first three days. All of them must have a Covid-19 test on the third day of the quarantine. Those who tested negative are allowed to leave their room and enjoy hotel and resort facilities. They will have another swab test on the ninth day. They will then be allowed to leave the hotel and travel in the country if their results still proved negative.

The Minister told the press: “After the Area Hotel Quarantine is made, other tourism proposals, such as travel bubbles or sandbox tourism between cities or countries are likely to be considered depending on the readiness of Thailand and Thai people. Of course, this also depends on the global situation with Covid-19.”

“If the Area Hotel Quarantine is approved and operated functionally, Thailand might welcome vaccinated tourists without performing alternative state quarantine in the near future.”

The Pattaya News noted that the Area Hotel Quarantine proposal has not been given final approved by the Thai government but is under discussion among the related Ministries as well as the Cabinet committee.
