Terminal 21 Pattaya providing free space for skateboarding

Pattaya-

The Terminal 21 Pattaya shopping mall has provided a free, legal, and safe space for skateboarding enthusiasts daily.

The Terminal 21 Pattaya shopping mall, yesterday (February 16th), has opened for the first day a free space near the plane area for teenagers (and a few slightly older folks seen as well) who play street sports, skateboard, inline skate, and other similar types of activities. Many people were seen joining in the activities on the first day.

Ms. Hatairat Poeket, the director of Terminal 21 Pattaya, told The Pattaya News, “We still had wide space in this area around the plane and without as many tourists or traffic as before we wanted to find a good way to utilize it and help the local community. We have provided security for athletes and youth to use the area to practice and skate or play sports for free from 4:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. daily.”

“Skateboarding is growing in popularity in Thailand and has become an increasing pastime for youth, as well as some adults. However, there are limited places in Pattaya currently for people to safely skate and feel welcome. We feel that by providing this zone and welcoming those interested in the sport we are helping the local community.” Hatairat stated.

Hatairat added that the mall has on-duty medics at all times to assist with any injuries and that the mall is looking into adding equipment, such as small ramps, to the area.

The Pattaya News notes that previous plans for a skatepark near Bali Hai over the past several years have fallen through due to the Covid-19 pandemic and other complications. However, youth often use the former parking lot for tour buses, now largely empty of tourists, to skate in that area as well. This area, however, is not monitored or as well lit as the new area at Terminal 21.
