Burmese nationals living in Thailand and pro-democracy supporters gathered in front of the United Nations regional office in Bangkok this afternoon, February 7th, to protest against the military coup in Myanmar and demand the release of the National League of Democracy (NLD) leader Aung San Suu Kyi and other party members being under the military custody.
The demonstration started around 11:00 AM. on Ratchadamoen Avenue of the capital. Protesters were seen raising three-finger salutes and holding signages, pictures of Aung San Suu Kyi, and the Myanmar flags as a sign of resistance against the military power.
NLD political leader Aung San Suu Kyi including several government-ruling party members and MPs were detained in the early hours of February 1st after the army, led by General Min Aung Hlaing, declared a “temporary” one-year military takeover and a State of Emergency in the country, claiming election fraud in the recent elections without providing evidence.
According to the Bangkok police, about 300 people reportedly gathered at the site in front of the United Nations. Meanwhile, a group of Thai police in riot gear was also seen approaching the protest site after the protest started.
The large group of demonstrators reportedly fled the scene and dispersed as soon as the armed police arrived at the demonstration at around 2:00 PM. No injuries were reported at the scene as of this afternoon.
It is believed that the deployment of the riot police was in effect due to the violation of the National Emergency Decree to prevent the spread of Covid-19 Coronavirus, according to the Thai government. Critics, however, claimed the emergency decree law was essentially being used as a scapegoat.
