National –
Justice Minister Somsak Thepsuthin yesterday, January 4th, proposed an idea of astrology subjects in prison lessons for occupational purposes in order to create a fortune-telling profession for prisoners after detention.
The Minister stated during the Board of Corrections annual meeting yesterday that 35 percent of inmates want to work but there is no job for them to do after leaving imprisonment while about 15 percent of them had not planned to work and were willing to commit recidivism as the prison has provided them shelter and food sufficiently.
“The matter needs to be seriously discussed. We must try to do something productive for every prisoner in terms of creating a career, such as raising chickens for cockfighting. This may seem for a game of gambling but the job can be something useful in preserving something traditional,” he added.
Currently, prisoners are skillfully taught for many professions depending on what they prefer, such as planting, harvesting, and raising livestock. However, a new idea of fortune-telling lessons was just being mentioned by the Minister, reasoning that it was a career with low investment but highly popular in the country.
The Board of Corrections was urged to plan the study of astrology and fortune-telling in the prison. The prisoners who wish to become fortune-tellers will be required to meditate and read astrology books.
“From now on, the fortune-telling lessons will be added in correctional career courses because they required very low investment, only about 500 baht for 2 decks of tarot cards. The Correction Board should prepare for the astrology and fortune-telling courses for inmates who wanted to become fortune-tellers.” Somsak concluded.
