Borthong, Chonburi-

Three people have died after a speeding pickup truck reportedly crashed into a motorbike sidecar with three people this past weekend in the Borthong portion of Chonburi. The pickup truck driver tried to flee the scene of the accident, claiming to police that he was going to get help.

The Borthong Police was notified of the accident on Sunday (December 27th) in the Kaset Suwan sub-district.

Rescue workers arrived at the scene to find a damaged motorbike sidecar and a pickup truck on the road.

Two dead bodies were found on the road which were a nine year old boy and Ms. Nipaphon Phongsai, 47.

Ms. Kanlayaphon Saesaow, 53, had sustained serious injuries. She was later pronounced dead.

Local witnesses told police that the three victims were on the motorbike sidecar when the speeding pickup truck crashed into the back of their vehicle.

The pickup truck driver, who was named only as Mr. Lert, 57, attempted to flee on foot after the accident. However, police later caught him one kilometer from the scene with the assistance of witnesses to the accident who followed the suspect.

Mr. Lert claimed, according to police, that the motorbike sidecar had immediately crossed in front of his pickup truck causing the accident and claimed he ran away to get help. He was unable to avoid the collision, he added.

At this stage, the Borthong police stated that they do not believe Mr. Lert’s statements. He is facing charges of reckless driving causing death.
