National –
The Crime Suppression Division (CSD) will be responsible for the investigation of 512 hotels and restaurants for alleged fraud over government subsidies in the “We Travel Together” scheme.
Police Commander Suwat Saengnom of the CSD said yesterday, December 18th, the case is currently under investigation after the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) governor filed legal action against 312 hotels, 202 restaurants and some other venues as the TAT detected many kinds of possible fraud in the tourism scheme.
The “We Travel Together” stimulus campaign was launched in July by the government to economically encourage domestic tourists to travel across the country to generate domestic income during the Covid-19 global pandemic.
According to TAT governor Yuthasak Supasorn, fraud included fake check-ins at hotels with cheap room rates to claim daily spending subsidies from the scheme worth about 600 to 900 baht, as well as unreasonable room rates and the registration of hotel businesses that have already been closed down.
Despite the legal action, tourists could continue exercising their rights to subsidies under the scheme. The complaint was aimed at ensuring transparency and preventing fraud before opening the second phase of the scheme, said the governor.
