Man drowns while diving for shells off of Jomtien beach

Pattaya-

A man who was searching for shells in deep water off of Jomtien Beach using scuba diving gear was pronounced dead yesterday after running out of oxygen.

The Pattaya City Police was notified of the incident at about noon yesterday (December 12th) near Jomtien Soi 5.

Rescue divers arrived at the scene to find about ten fishing boats about one kilometer away from the beach in deep water where local fishermen were searching for their friend.

Rescue divers took about twenty minutes to find the body of a Thai man aged around 35 years old in the water. His body was pulled up onto Jomtien beach.

Rescue divers from the Pattaya Marine Rescue Department told The Pattaya News that the group of divers were fishermen from Si Racha. The man was described as a fairly new diver and fisherman and they believed he had an oxygen error with his diving gear while about nine meters beneath his boat diving for shells. They also stated his inexperience appeared to add to the problem. His name was withheld pending a complete investigation by authorities into the incident.
