Chiang Rai confirms 4 new cases of COVID-19, one of them a local transmission related to three Thai women crossing border from Myanmar illegally

Chiang Rai-

The Chiang Rai Public Health Office today (December 3rd) has confirmed four more cases of COVID-19. One of them is a local transmission and the first connected to a cluster of Thai women who snuck over the border from Tachiliek, Myanmar illegally.

Three of the cases were people who legally went through the quarantine process after turning themselves in at the border between Tachiliek and Mae Sai. These three never had exposure to the general public according to Chiang Rai authorities.

The fourth case is a 28 year old male (transgender) who worked at a Chiang Rai night club, living in Chiang Rai, who is linked to a prior Covid-19 positive patient in Phayao who had snuck over the border recently from Tachiliek. His timeline is below:

November 28: Around 1:00 PM three female friends crossed over illegally from Tachiliek, Myanmar to visit him and asked to stay at his apartment. Later that evening the patient went to work.

November 29th: Hung out with the three friends who stayed at his place. Around 5:00 pm went to an event called ‘Farm Festival’ until 11:00 PM and then went out drinking until the early morning of the next day. He claims to have worn a mask and mostly stayed at a single area of the festival, not entering the main crowd by the concert stages.

November 30th: Drove to Chiang Mai with the same group of friends using a personal vehicle to drop them off at their selected destinations.

December 1st: Travelled back to Chiang Rai on a public bus. In the evening the patient went to work.

December 2nd: He was notified by health authorities that his friends who had snuck over the border from Myanmar tested positive for COVID-19. He went to a private hospital to get tested for COVID-19 himself, despite having no symptoms. He tested positive for Covid-19. He remains in quarantine at this time.

Authorities in Chiang Rai have not yet commented on if the patient will potentially face charges relating to assisting the prior group who snuck over the border against the law and, according to them, set the country at risk. The Public Health Minister, Anutin Charnvirakul, has already said all of those who snuck over the border against the law will face significant and harsh legal charges.
