Three Burmese truck drivers were found to be infected with the Covid-19 coronavirus as they were tested in Tak province while attempting to cross the border as part of a previously approved supply convoy to purchase goods at a market in the Mae Sot district last week.

Dr. Opas Karnkawinpong, the Deputy Permanent Secretary for Public Health, told the Associated Press today, October 11, that all drivers were already sent back to Myawaddy after being tested while 73 people, including local vendors in the market and immigration officers who had come into close contact with the Myanmar drivers, were tested negative so far and were quarantined for fourteen days out of precaution.

“All people with a risk of infection were required to perform a 14-day quarantine at their residences. The Public Health Ministry has also sent 3 mobile Covid-19 test vehicles as well as blood and immune test kits and personal protective equipment (PPE) to support medical officers in the area to monitor any potential virus infection.” the deputy said.

Border security authorities in the province are now tightening their standards and are on high alert to prevent people from crossing the border from Myanmar illegally while locals are raising concerns that they may carry the virus into the kingdom.

The rapid number of Covid-19 infections in Myanmar during the past months, particularly in Rhakine and Yangon cities, had resulted in Thailand’s tightening of border crossings and the ban of Myanmar nationals for entry across the country.

In Mae Sot district, only unloaded vehicles for transporting goods are now permitted to enter the country and to drive to buy supplies and goods at warehouses and local markets.
