Religious Holiday this Saturday, February 8th in Thailand will bring a 24 hour alcohol sales ban

This upcoming Saturday, February 8th, 2020, is a religious holiday in Thailand which means many religious events and an alcohol sales ban for 24 hours.

Makha Bucha Day, which celebrates a sermon and gathering between the Buddha and 1250 of his first disciples is held on the full moon day of the third lunar month yearly. It is considered a day of gratitude and to celebrate an examplary community.

In Thailand, residents and Buddhist’s mark the day by making merit, visiting the local temple, performing tian wian (candle circle) in which they walk around local temples clockwise three times with lit candles, giving alms to monks, reflecting on religious teachings and abstaining from alcohol and gambling.

This also means that a mandatory alcohol sales ban will be in effect for 24 hours. It will take effect at 12:01 AM on Saturday morning and Last a full 24 hours until Midnight.

This ban includes bars, Nightclubs gogos, hotels, restaurants, stores, supermarkets and more. Most entertainment related venues, like Nightclubs and bars, will be completely closed during the holiday.

Restaurants and many sports bars will be open, but will strictly not serve alcohol. Serving alcohol can bring significant fines and even five year closures.

The Government holiday is set for Monday, February 10. This affects government offices, but should not effect entertainment venues or an alcohol ban.
