Pattaya —

Businesses and residents in Pattaya appear to have mixed reactions regarding the Thai government’s consideration to potentially reclassify cannabis as a controlled substance.

Mr. Bank, an employee at HoneyPuff, a marijuana dispensary near Walking Street in South Pattaya, gave an interview with local media, stating he was very concerned about this possible legal shift.

He said that his employer has already invested a large sum of money to pay for various costs, such as importing equipment, signing contracts with cannabis farms, and obtaining legal licenses, to open a marijuana dispensary. However, if the reclassification really takes effect, Mr. Bank feared that it would have a domino effect, potentially leading to job losses for employees like himself and closures of over a thousand cannabis shops in Pattaya.

However, the proposed reclassification has also drawn different reactions from the public.

Mr. Ta, a vendor at Pattaya Beach, told local media that he totally supported the reclassification because he claimed he has witnessed a lot of instances of cannabis misuse, particularly among young people.

“I’ve seen too many people, especially young ones, using cannabis irresponsibly,” Mr. Ta said. “I’m worried about its impact on their future.”

The fight over cannabis legalization is far from over. Pro-cannabis groups are threatening large protests if the Thai government reclassifies cannabis without being unable to prove that cannabis is more harmful than alcohol.
