At 2:00 PM, on April 10th, 2024, the Thai Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB) and relevant agencies launched an operation “Cyber Strike” to shut down nine online gambling networks with a total turnover of more than five billion baht a year.
According to the CCIB, the investigative teams investigated illegal online gambling networks and inspected digital evidence linked to nine gambling websites.
After gathering the evidence, the CCIB officers requested search warrants from the criminal court in 17 different locations in three provinces including Kanchanaburi, Chumphon, and Bangkok.
Upon the Cyber Strike operation, the owner of the online gambling websites, publicly identified only as Mr. Songsak, 44, was captured at a residence in Chatuchak, Bangkok, and 29 other involved individuals were also captured across 17 locations as well.
There were more than 59,000 users reportedly registered in the online gambling websites with a total turnover of more than five billion baht annually. Furthermore, the CCIB officers were able to seize luxury cars, cash, and other assets, with an estimated value of 500 million baht.
This successful operation was on orders by the Thai government aimed to eradicate cyber crimes and take serious legal action against illegal gambling networks that caused trouble to the public. The Thai Ministry of Digital Economy and Society shut down 7,612 URLs of online gambling websites from April 1st to 9th, 2024.
