Phang Nga’s “James Bond Island” in need of stability assessment following several collapses of similar rock formations in Southern Thailand

Phang Nga –

Thailand’s Department of Mineral Resources urgently plans to assess the stability of Phang Nga’s limestone karst towers “James Bond Island” in April and May after several similar rock formations of the towers elsewhere in Thailand were reportedly collapsing.

Deputy Director-General Montri Lueng-Ingkasoot revealed today, April 1st, that similar limestone formations in several parts of Southern Thailand are at high risk of decay as many of them have already been collapsed by thunderstorms and depressions.

James Bond Island was one of the risk areas, according to the department. As it was a popular tourist destination, a thorough study of its structural viability is needed to be carried out as soon as possible as it could affect the safety of tourists.

The Deputy Director-General stated: “Seasonal storms in the Southern parts of Thailand had gradually affected the limestone. Some of them were already eroded because they were unable to support the weight. This may cause a danger to tourists when they visited the area.”

The assessment of Jame Bond Island is scheduled for the first time and will take place this month in April and May by experts from the Mineral Resources department. The team will be looking at the structure of the cracks and fissures as well as estimating the possible rate of erosion by using data on seawater erosion factors.
