Golf: 17-year-old Chanettee enjoys perfect round to lead Thailand Mixed Halfway

Cha-Am, Thailand-

Teenage rising star Chanettee Wannasaen fired a sizzling 63 to steal the limelight after round two of the Bt3 million Thailand Mixed hosted by TrustGolf at the Springfield Royal Country Club in Cha-Am on Friday.

The 17-year-old girl from Chiang Mai produced four birdies at the front nine and four more after the turn (four straights from holes 10-13) for an immaculate second-round performance which saw her lead the halfway stage on 14 under-par-130 in the season-opener of the Thailand TrustGolf Tour series.

“I was playing unbelievably well by shooting scores in all par-five holes. I felt confident about the course as it isn’t that big. I was able to hit the ball close the pins in several holes,” said Chanettee who just won her second consecutive National Qualifiers for a berth into the LPGA Thailand event due next month in Chonburi.

The up-and-coming Chanettee has always emerged as a strong contender in the Thailand Mixed series, posting three top-five finishes including a tied third in the fourth circuit at the Black Mountain Golf Club in Hua Hin in November.

“I will stick to my game plan as I did in the second round. But I’m going to use my 3 wood in some holes instead of a driver. I think I’m more comfortable with my 3 wood in those holes and should hit the greens more,” added the teenager who also bagged an SAT-TWT Open title at the Phoenix Gold Golf and Country Club last November.

With two eagles on the second and finishing holes plus five birdies against a lone bogey on the fourth, Sherman Santiwiwatthanaphong shot a second-round 64 to fall two shots off the lead on 12 under-par-132.

“Things just went my way with a little bit of luck. I made a 20-foot par putt and shot two eagles. I came to this tournament really well prepared by focusing on my fitness, ball control, and concentration,” said the former LPGA player.

Settee Prakrongvech, winner of the Boonchua Ruangkit Championship two weeks ago in Nakhon Ratchasima, hit an eagle on the seventh hole, five birdies against three bogeys for a 68 to sit four back with a total 10 under-par-134.

“Overall, I was happy with my round even though I made some bad putts. I hit the iron well and hit some good shots. I just didn’t make a few putts,” said Settee whose lone third finish in the inaugural episode last February at the Black Mountain was his best attempt in the Thailand Mixed to date.

“For tomorrow, I will have to make birdies on some easy holes as this is not a big course. I need to hit the iron well and make some good putts,” said the 27-year-old from Chonburi.

Overnight leader Dussavi Sooopimjit hit a 71 to come at shared fourth on 136 along with several players including  Thaya Limpipolpaibul, Jaravee Boonchant, Trichat Cheenglab, Sangchai Kaewcharoen, and Nattagate Nimitpongkul.
