Suphanburi—

On January 17th, 2024, Thai national media reported a fireworks factory explosion accident in Mueang, Suphanburi, causing 23 casualties and 6 injuries confirmed as of press time.

Suphanburi rescue teams were dispatched to the fireworks factory after receiving a report that they could hear explosive sounds periodically and that the factory and the surroundings were destroyed.

According to a report by the police, the Thai Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team was in the process of recovering explosives and the police had secured the area to prevent unrelated individuals from interfering with the investigation and police operation. However, the police would investigate further to determine the exact cause of the accident.

The fireworks factory had valid permission to operate and trade fireworks issued by Suphanburi officials, Thai media reported.

Mrs. Namfon Bunklom, one of the workers at the fireworks factory, reportedly said to the police that at 3:00 PM, her son called while she was working at the factory to go back home, due to financial issues.

However, after 30 minutes had passed and Namfon had gone home early to help her son with a financial problem, the fireworks factory exploded, causing her relatives still working at the factory, including her mother, to die.

The fireworks factory had previously exploded on November 30th, 2022, causing 1 death and 4 injuries, reported Thai media.
