The Association of Thai Travel Agents (ATTA) encourages the Thai government to welcome vaccinated foreigners to visit Thailand without quarantine in the third quarter of 2021 after about 30 percent of inbound tourist companies are reportedly permanently closed down due to the financial crisis during the Covid-19 global pandemic.

ATTA president Vichit Prakobgosol told reporters yesterday, January 11th, that 30 percent of 10,000 registered inbound tourism companies have permanently shut down, while 50 percent of them have temporarily stopped their operations since Thailand’s borders are closed for international visitors, according to the research.

Only 20 percent of inbound companies remain in business by shifting their target to the domestic market but are still not properly operating due to the new wave of local transmissions.

In order to maintain the other 20 percent of tourism operators, the government has to be able to control the outbreak in February and reduce the number of domestic infections to only two digits, Vichit suggested.

He added: “If the number of infections has reduced from hundreds to tens, it should create trust and a better tourism atmosphere. It is believed that in the third quarter of 2021, there will be more foreign tourists visiting the country and the tourism sector will recover more than 80 percent in 2022. This will, without a doubt, gradually solve the country’s struggling economy.”

As many countries have begun their injection program for their citizens, including potential tourists from China and Southeast Asia, ATTA then proposes the idea of granting those vaccinated from state quarantine when visiting Thailand for tourism purposes.

The President continued: “Approximately, more than 1 billion people around the world will have completed two doses of Covid-19 vaccinations later this year and many will desperately want to travel abroad after over a year of being locked down at home. Therefore, we would like the government to put measures in to accommodate and attract this group of people to travel in Thailand without a 14-day quarantine.”

“The government could ask them to install certain tracking mobile applications in order to trace the Covid-19 virus upon their arrival. Moreover, the earlier announcement of the arrival of Covid-19 vaccination in Thailand by February might have caused less stress and concern among Thai people when welcoming foreign tourists. We predict the majority of vulnerable and at risk people will be vaccinated by the third quarter in Thailand based on the government’s current plan which should allow vaccinated people to enter with no quarantine.” Vichit concluded.
