Pattaya Countdown event cancelled out of Covid-19 precautions

Pattaya-

The Pattaya City Mayor today (December 22nd) has announced the cancelation of ‘PATTAYA COUNTDOWN 2021’.

Mayor Sonthaya Khunpluem said, “Due to the Covid -19 situation in Samut Sakhon and nearby areas, the Pattaya City Administration unfortunately has to announce the cancelation of the Pattaya Countdown 2021.”

“We are afraid that there could be more than 300,000 people who would join in the countdown event which will be difficult to control and protect. As the event had advertised many of Thailand’s top musical artists people would be expected to travel from all around Thailand which would raise concerns about Covid-19.”

“Even though there will be no countdown event, we expect that there will be many people visiting Pattaya for their New Year holidays.”

“Any activity must provide social distancing. Any gathering must not have more than 300 people and should file a request for permission.”

“We have to be on our guard more than before for Covid-19 measurements.” The Mayor concluded.

The Pattaya News noted this is NOT because any cases have been found in Pattaya or Chonburi but rather as a precaution to avoid attracting large amounts of out of town crowds.

This comes after the Chonburi governor last night made a request (not a hard order) for large scale events to be postponed or canceled out of precaution.

At this stage there is no ban on small events, bars or clubs holding small events as long as measures are followed and numbers of people are limited.
