Thai doctors and officials “deeply concerned” about possibility of illegal border crossers spreading Covid-19

Thailand-

Dr. Taweesin Visanuyothin, the spokesperson of the Center for Covid-19 Situation Administration, or CCSA, has given a stark warning on the possibility of people illegally crossing borders to enter Thailand potentially spreading the Covid-19 Coronavirus this week.

Dr. Taweesin noted that while Thai authorities and border officials were doing everything in their power to stop illegal crossings some people, especially illegal migrant workers, were continuing to get through cracks in the system.

Taweesin stated that border officials estimated roughly 3000 people illegally entered the country last month alone.

This comes as a tour bus that was stopped at a checkpoint was found to be carrying 6 illegal immigrants from Laos yesterday. Mukdahan Immigration Police from the Nong Sung Police Station arrested the driver for breaking orders in defiance of the emergency decree who was working with the Laos Nationals to transport them illegally. The six Laos Nationals will be deported and will undergo Covid19 testing.

Thai border control has stated that they will be implementing regular checkpoints on every major road around border areas and have also recruited village elders and health volunteers around the country to report strangers and potential illegal border crossers. They noted that not only illegal migrant workers were attempting to cross but also some foreigners “desperate” to enter the country in any way possible.

Thailand has gone over 45 days without a single confirmed, recorded case of Covid-19 locally spread.
