Two police officers have sustained serious injuries after a truck whose driver fell asleep at the wheel crashed into their highway police vehicle in Si Racha this afternoon (January 26th).
Rescue workers were notified of the accident at 1:00 P.M. on the Motorway in the Bang Phra sub-district.
Rescue staff along with affiliated press arrived at the scene to find a damaged trailer truck crashed into a highway police vehicle. Frantic bystanders were attempting to assist the injured highway police at the scene of the accident and the driver of the trailer truck was in shock but uninjured.
Two highway police sustained various injuries who were named as Senior Sergeant Major Kraiyut Pankamnerd and Senior Sergeant Major Tanaphon Homkajorn. They were rushed to a local hospital for medical assistance.
The shaken but uninjured trailer truck driver, Mr. Rattana Panphon, 28, was waiting at the scene for assistance and described as cooperative by law enforcement despite being visibly upset and shocked.
Rattana told police, “I was feeling tired and looking for a place to pull over for a nap but this particular stretch of road had no rest areas available.”
“I must have fallen asleep while looking for a place to pull over, causing the accident. I am very sorry for what happened and hope both officers are ok.” Rattana concluded.
Rattana reportedly admitted fault in the incident and is fully cooperating with police in the investigation and liability related charges.
