Venum Training Camp Thailand in Pattaya seeking help from Thai government over economic crisis and Covid-19 related closure

Pattaya-

Venum Training Camp Thailand in Pattaya is seeking assistance from the Thai government over the current economic crisis due to the second round of Covid-19 infections in Thailand with the hope to open their business again in the near future.

Ms. Sasi Talerngphon, 26, is the manager of  Venum Training Camp Thailand which is located on Soi Kopai in South Pattaya.

She told The Pattaya News, “We have more than 15 boxers currently enrolled with us full-time but we do not have any matches scheduled currently to earn any income as the government has ordered the temporary closing of boxing gyms and stadiums in Chonburi.”

“That being said, we still take care of our boxers even though our boxing gym is temporarily closed. We provide those who are short on income with their essential needs while they are unable to perform the sport they love.” Sasi continued.

“We are still selling boxing items as a retail outlet currently because boxers are not legally allowed to train or perform but there has been little interest from the public so far and the number of potential customers in Chonburi currently are limited due to travel restrictions and lack of foreign tourists.” Sasi noted

“We want the government to let us open even small, controlled portions of the gym for students to learn boxing so that we can earn some money or tell us when we are able to open transparently. We have currently been closed (along with many other venues in Pattaya) for three weeks and government officials have yet to give any sort of plan or timeline around when we can open again. The number of cases of Covid-19 in Chonburi has dropped to almost nothing yet we remain closed.” Sasi added, with The Pattaya News noting that Chonburi recorded zero cases of Covid-19 over the last 24 hours.

Sasi and her staff stated to The Pattaya News that their industry has been devastated by foreign travel restrictions and lack of foreign tourists, who were a significant amount of their visitors, over the last year. The second round of Covid-19, which closed them again, has impacted their business even further and there have not been any official notices of business-related aid for the fitness and gym industry in general. Informal workers can claim 3,500 Thai baht a month for the next two months and social security recipients can claim up to fifty percent of their daily wages which provides some assistance, Sasi noted, but not enough to pay rent and other related bills.

The Chonburi Public Health Committee stated to the Thai press earlier this week that they, in their words, understand the extreme difficulty and pain local business owners are undergoing and that they will loosen and relax restrictions as soon as possible. The Health Department is currently conducting targeted mass testing around Chonburi to attempt to determine if there are hidden asymptomatic carriers of Covid-19 still in the province. The Chonburi Governor has stated to the press that he will review some of the restrictions likely by the end of the month but this is not a promise of reopening business, especially if cases of Covid-19 continue to be found.
