CCSA: No relaxation on social distancing measures, masks anytime soon in Thailand due to illegal border crossing concerns

Bangkok-

The Center for Covid-19 Situation Administration, or CCSA, in Bangkok has expressed concern that the Covid-19 virus could see a resurgence in Thailand, especially with a four day holiday weekend ahead and many Thai nationals returning to their home to see family and friends.

This concern comes as many people on social media and online forums have questioned the need for strict social distancing measures, mask wearing and other safety measures when there have been no confirmed locally spread cases of the Covid-19 virus in Thailand for approaching forty days.

Dr. Taweesin Visanuyothin, spokesperson of the CCSA, addressed these concerns in a statement to the associated press.

“There is evidence that illegal workers have actively been trying to cross the borders without permission from our neighbor countries. Although border security has been greatly increased, officials with border control agencies estimate close to three thousand illegal migrants may have successfully crossed into Thailand in the last month alone.”

“We urge the Thai community to come together and work with us on identifying those who break the law and potentially set the community up for risk. We have been successful to this point fighting the virus in Thailand due to our extensive volunteer network in villages across Thailand and spirit of cooperation among Thai people.”

“We cannot allow ourselves to let our guard down and relax mask wearing, social distancing and other hygiene measures as the virus is still infecting tens of thousands daily around the world and in parts of Southeast Asia. We must continue to wear masks, avoid large crowds, wash our hands and socially distance.” Dr. Taweesin concluded.

Thailand just entered the fifth phase of relaxing restrictions and easing measures introduced to help stop the spread of the Covid-19 virus in the kingdom. This phase included re-opening what CCSA officials called the riskiest venues, such as bars and night clubs, as well as school re-openings.  Dr. Taweesin has also said the CCSA remains concerned about these venues and lack of physical distancing taking place and has urged local and regional law enforcement to ensure business owners are following rules and regulations.
