Animals at Chonburi Open Zoo Enjoy Frozen Snacks to Combat Intense Heat

Chonburi —

Lions, bears, monkeys, and several other animals at the Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Chonburi have been given frozen treats as a gift to help them cope with the current high temperature in Thailand.

On March 8th, 2024, Mr. Narongwit Chodchoi, the zoo director, stated to reporters that the zoo provided a refreshing selection of frozen fruits, including oranges, watermelons, and apples, all mixed with sweetened water, to small animals while animals like Asian black bear, lions, and other carnivores received icy pig legs for them to lick and chew.

According to the Thai Meteorological Department, all regions of Thailand are at risk of experiencing temperatures reaching as high as 40 degrees Celsius in March and April.

“During the current extreme temperatures, prioritizing the animals’ well-being is very important,” Mr. Narongwit stated during an interview. “Heat can cause stress, leading to decreased breeding rates and reduced appetite for the animals.”

Mr. Narongwit continued that from March to May, which is typically the hottest period, the zoo implements these special measures to ensure the animals’ comfort. Additionally, frozen fruits and meat are provided during the exceptionally hot afternoons to keep the animals happy and prevent them from becoming irritable.
