Activists opposing proposal for entertainment venues being allowed to legally open later protest in Bangkok

Thailand –

The Life Quantity Development Network is opposed to extending entertainment venues opening hours even in tourism only zones.

Our previous story:

Entertainment venue operators filed a letter to the Thai government requesting to legally open their venues until 4 A.M. and to cancel afternoon alcohol sales ban hours of 2-5.

The group was present near the Thai Government House today (November 11th) and was led by Ms. Krueamas Srijan. A letter was filed to the to the Prime Minister over the opposition of a proposal for entertainment venues opening hours to be extended to 4:00 A.M.. Joining the opposition were survivors and victim’s families and friends from drunk driving accidents.

The group states they want to decrease road accidents and to support a campaign for stricter alcohol rules. Thai road accidents statistics shows that the drunk driving is the main factor of road deaths in which the number is unable to be controlled, said the protesters

Entertainment venues opening hours extensions will effect life quality and create social problems as well as increase more work for medical staffers, the group claimed.

The group has also called on the government to talk with victims and their families from drunk driving. Many families were broken up, women were assaulted, and children were abandoned. The group stated that trying to make more money from what they called drunk tourists was not worth the possible medical and social issues 4am closures would cause.

There was no immediate answer from the Thai government on the petition but the Tourism Authority of Thailand is set to officially present the proposal to extend hours at least in foreign tourism areas like Pattaya and Phuket next week.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and business owners in the nightlife and entertainment industry have continued to rally for later closing times stating that tourists on holiday don’t want to go home at 2AM and presenting various studies showing that nightclubs were most profitable between 2AM to 4AM, according to their data. They also have claimed the vast majority of tourists don’t drive on holiday and take taxis home, therefore reducing any drunk driving risks in foreign tourism areas.

The TAT studies were not peer reviewed by The Pattaya News.
