The Parliament President and speaker, Chuan Leekpai, confirmed today, November 11th, 2020, that Parliament will be meeting on November 17th and 18th to discuss potential constitutional charter draft amendments.

These follow the building of a reconciliation committee and continuing protests in Thailand, both pro-democracy and pro-establishment.

The meetings will be in the daytime as some of those voting in Parliament have allegedly expressed concern about anti-government protesters gathering at night, despite there not being a single violent incident at a prior gathering at Parliament.

There will be seven total drafts, with one written by iLaw ( Internet Dialogue on Law Reform) that is widely supported by pro-democracy protesters and six written by both government and opposition members of parliament. The draft written by iLaw contains controversial measures on the highest institution of Thailand, according to those familiar with the contents. These measures have been the largest flashpoint between opposing views over the last several months.

For a charter draft amendment to pass it will need a majority of parliamentary votes (at least 375), of which at least a third, or 84, must come from the 250 junta-appointed senators according to Thai media. The Government chief whip Wirat Rattanaset stated that the Government will be pushing hard for senators to agree with one of their amendments.

The Pattaya News will be covering developments on these amendments when the parliament debate takes place.
